Major Barbara

George Bernard Shaw · 1905 CE · Play · English · Modernist

A major in the Salvation Army runs a West Ham shelter on bread, treacle and conversions, and her estranged father, who has never seen it, agrees to visit hers if she will visit his: a cannon foundry and the model town around it. While she is working, a cheque from a whisky distiller and a matching one from the armourer arrive at the shelter. Her fiance, a professor of Greek modelled on Gilbert Murray, quotes the Bacchae throughout.
