Mrs Warren's Profession
Vivie Warren, down from Cambridge with a tie in the mathematical tripos, receives her mother at a Surrey cottage and asks the question nobody has answered: where the money comes from. Mrs Warren sets out the alternatives open to a poor girl of her generation, and is entirely convincing; what she leaves out is that the establishments are still trading. Shaw took the germ from Maupassant's Yvette, and the Lord Chamberlain withheld a licence for thirty years.
