The Threepenny Opera

Bertolt Brecht · 1928 CE · Play · German · Modernist

London in coronation week: a bandit who dresses like a gentleman marries the daughter of the man who franchises the city's beggars, in a stable furnished with stolen goods. The father-in-law sets the police on him, the police chief turns out to be an old army friend, and the women of Turnbridge know exactly where he spends his Thursdays. Weill's score and the Berlin run made Brecht famous overnight and gave the century one of its most-recorded songs.
