The Caucasian Chalk Circle

Bertolt Brecht · 1948 CE · Play · German · Modernist

A governor is beheaded in a palace coup and his wife flees with her dresses, leaving the heir in the courtyard where a kitchen maid picks him up. She carries him over the northern mountains, buys him a father to give him a name, and keeps him two years until the fighting ends and soldiers come for the child; the case goes to a drunkard the rebels made a judge. Brecht took the trial from a Yuan dynasty source and the framing quarrel from Soviet Georgia.
