The Good Person of Szechwan
Three gods come down to a Chinese province looking for one person good enough to justify the world, and find only a prostitute willing to give them a bed for the night. They leave her money for a tobacco shop, and the neighbours, the landlady and a jobless flyer she cuts down from a tree eat through it so fast that she invents a hard-dealing male cousin to keep the doors open. A parable of whether goodness is affordable.
