The Life of Galileo

Bertolt Brecht · 1943 CE · Play · German · Modernist

A mathematics lecturer in Padua, behind on the rent and tired of tutoring dull sons, hears of a Dutch tube with lenses in it, builds a better one and sells it to the Venetian senate as his own before turning it on Jupiter. What he finds there puts the earth off centre, and an old friend elected pope must let the Holy Office talk to him. Brecht revised it with Charles Laughton after Hiroshima, hardening the charge against a science that sells its findings.
