Romola
A charming Greek scholar is washed up in Florence in 1492, marries the blind Bardo's daughter, and rises by telling each faction what it wants to hear while quietly disposing of the man who raised him. Savonarola empties the city of its vanities from the pulpit and hands the wife a discipline she can set against her husband. Eliot read for two years to write it and said she began it a young woman and finished it an old one; it is the least loved and the most researched thing she made.
