Silas Marner
A linen-weaver driven out of his chapel community by a false accusation settles alone outside a village, works his loom, and counts his gold every night for fifteen years. The money is stolen; a golden-haired child crawls in from the snow to his hearth; and the squire's family at the Red House says nothing about where she came from. Eliot's shortest work, a village fable in which money and a child are exchanged for one another.
