Resurrection
Called for jury service, a Petersburg prince recognises the prostitute in the dock as the girl he seduced on his aunts' estate ten years before, and a clerical slip in the verdict sends her to Siberia. He resolves to follow her and marry her, and the resolve drags him through courts, cells, ministries and the drawing rooms of everyone who profits from them. Written to fund the Doukhobors' emigration, its treatment of the sacraments was among the grounds cited when the Holy Synod excommunicated Tolstoy two years later.
