Master and Man

Leo Tolstoy · 1895 CE · Short Story · Russian · Victorian

A merchant sets out through a blizzard to buy a wood before a rival can reach the seller, taking his labourer and a good horse and refusing every offer of shelter on the road. The track disappears, the sledge begins to circle back on its own tracks, and the two men are left with a bottle, a horse and each other. A late parable from the years Tolstoy spent arguing that art is worthless unless a peasant can follow it.
