A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens · 1843 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

On Christmas Eve a London moneylender refuses his nephew's invitation, grudges his clerk a day's holiday, and goes home to chambers where his dead partner's face rises in the door knocker. Three spirits take him through a past he had stopped looking at, a present being lived in rooms he has never entered, and a future he is shown rather than told. Written in six weeks to clear a debt, it did more than any sermon to fix the shape of the modern Christmas.
