A blacksmith's apprentice helps a convict on the marshes and is later summoned to a decayed mansion where an old woman in a wedding dress has stopped all the clocks. When an anonymous benefactor makes him a gentleman in London, he takes the money and grows ashamed of the people who raised him. An orphan learning what worth and gratitude really cost.
