Jack Maggs

Peter Carey · 1997 CE · Novel · Australian · Contemporary

A convict transported to New South Wales comes back illegally to London in 1837 to find the young gentleman he has been secretly funding since boyhood, and takes a footman's place in the house next door in order to watch. An ambitious young novelist called Tobias Oates gets him under mesmerism and begins mining his memories for a book of his own. Carey gives Magwitch the account Dickens never let him give, and puts Dickens in the room as the man stealing it.
