By the Sea
Abdulrazak Gurnah · 2001 CE · Novel · East African · Contemporary
Saleh Omar, an elderly man from Zanzibar, arrives at Gatwick with a carved incense box and claims asylum under a false name. In England he comes to meet the son of the family whose dispute with him many years earlier drove him from home. Two voices tell what happened, one on each side of the old quarrel, in a novel of dispossession from a writer later honoured with the Nobel Prize.
