A New World
Jayojit, an Indian academic divorced from his American wife, brings his young son to his parents' Calcutta flat for a summer visit. Little happens beyond meals, naps, a relative's visit and the boy's wary adjustment, and the book watches the ordinary hours for what they reveal of displacement and inheritance. It is Chaudhuri's most celebrated fiction in English, a plotless domestic novel that its prize committee read as a quiet counter to the Indian novel of spectacle.
