A Girl in Winter
Philip Larkin · 1947 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary
A young foreigner working in a provincial English library gets through one snowbound wartime day — a dentist's appointment, a colleague's malice, an errand across town — while the long middle section returns her to the English summer she spent as a schoolgirl guest before the war. The family who hosted her then is reachable again, and a letter has gone out. His second novel and the last he finished; a third was abandoned.
