Jill

Philip Larkin · 1946 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A scholarship boy out of a Lancashire mill town arrives at wartime Oxford, is put in with a careless public-school roommate, and invents a younger sister to hold his end of the conversation. The invention acquires a name, letters and a diary, and then a girl who answers to it crosses his path in a bookshop. Written at twenty-one, the first of the two novels he finished before poetry took over.
