The Whitsun Weddings

Philip Larkin · 1964 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

A slow Whitsun afternoon train out of Hull picks up wedding party after wedding party at each station, until a dozen marriages are travelling to London together without knowing it. Around that title piece stand a rented room whose last tenant died in it, an ambulance closing its doors in a city street, and a stone earl and countess holding hands on a tomb. The middle collection, and the one that made him the most widely read English poet of his generation.
