The Golden Apples
Seven linked stories run from about 1900 to the late 1940s in Morgana, Mississippi, a town whose collective voice opens the book with the disappearance of King MacLain, last seen leaving his hat on the bank of the Big Black River. His wife raises the twins he left her, the German piano teacher Miss Eckhart drills Virgie Rainey through music the girl will abandon, and the children of Morgana go to camp at Moon Lake and come back altered. Eudora Welty took the title from Yeats's Song of Wandering Aengus and let Zeus, Perseus and the wandering gods move through the town without once being named.
