The Robber Bridegroom
A planter named Clement Musgrove, a bandit who blacks his face with berry juice, and the boasting flatboatman Mike Fink share a room at an inn on the Natchez Trace, and the bandit saves the planter's gold without discovering whose daughter he will later carry off from the woods. Rosamond Musgrove lies beautifully out of pure habit, her stepmother Salome wants her dead, and the man who takes her keeps his face hidden — which is the one condition she is least equipped to leave alone. Eudora Welty crossed the Grimms' tale with the tall tales and real outlaws of the old Southwest, and set out the mixture herself in a later lecture on fairy tale and the Natchez Trace.
