Mulata
A poor farmer trades his wife to the corn-devil for wealth and is handed a moon-woman whose body is set the wrong way round, which turns out to be the beginning of his difficulties rather than the end. Wives shrink to the size of dolls, a Christian devil and an indigenous one dispute jurisdiction, and a village dissolves into carnival. Asturias's late grotesque runs on Guatemalan folk demonology and highland church syncretism.
