Bataan ri Phulwari
Rajasthani tales carried by grandmothers and by the bardic castes are taken down in the spoken dialects they were told in and rewritten sentence by sentence — fourteen volumes gathered across fifteen years in Borunda, the village Detha lived and worked in nearly all his life. Ghosts, talking animals and clever daughters-in-law move through them as a matter of course; the plots belong to the villages and the sympathies run to their women and their low castes. Written entirely in Rajasthani when Hindi was the only route to a readership, the cycle is the standing case for that language as a literature.
