Men of Maize

Miguel Ángel Asturias · 1949 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Indigenous growers who plant maize only to eat it are pushed off the highlands by commercial farmers burning the forest for a crop to sell, and the chief who resists lays a curse on the men who betray him. Six loosely joined parts follow that curse down the decades, through a woman's disappearance, a postman who runs as a coyote, and a search that crosses all of them. Asturias built the book on Maya cosmology, in which people are made of maize.
