The Hero Twins (Popol Vuh)

K'iche' Maya · c. 1550 CE · Myth / Legend · Maya · Renaissance

Hunahpu and Xbalanqué, twin ballplayers, make so much noise on the court that the lords of Xibalba summon them down to the underworld. They descend to play, and face houses of knives, cold, jaguars and fire, matching the lords trick for trick. Twin tricksters against the lords of death, from the creation book the K'iche' Maya wrote in Latin letters to keep it.
