Legends of Guatemala

Miguel Ángel Asturias · 1930 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

Prose pieces in which cities lie buried under cities, a volcano keeps a sleeping man, and the Cadejo and the Sombrerón walk out of Guatemalan colonial legend into an avant-garde register learned in Paris. An overture describes a country written over so many times that all its layers show through at once. Asturias had just helped put the Popol Vuh into French, and this first book is where that reading enters his prose.
