The Wawilak Sisters

Yolngu myth · c. 1800 CE · Myth / Legend · Aboriginal Australian · Romantic

Two sisters travel north with a child and a dog, naming the plants and animals as they pass them, and make camp at a waterhole where the great python Yurlunggur lies coiled beneath the surface. Blood falls into the water, the python rises and brings the wet season up with him, and the sisters dance and sing through the night to hold the storm off. The central narrative of Arnhem Land, performed in the Djungguwan and Kunapipi ceremonies, and the most closely documented of all Australian sacred stories.
