Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms)

Iryŏn · c. 1281 CE · Myth / Legend · Korean · Medieval

A Buddhist monk gathered up what the official state history of the Three Kingdoms had left out: foundation legends, temple miracles, the lives of eccentric monks, and the oldest hyangga songs anyone had bothered to write down. Kings hatch from eggs, an abbot argues with a dragon, a bear fasts in a cave to become a woman, and all of it sits beside genealogies and reign dates without apology. Iryŏn compiled it while the Mongols occupied the peninsula, and it remains the sole source for most of what Korea knows about its own antiquity.
