Dangun
A son of the Lord of Heaven asks for the world below, descends onto a mountain with three thousand followers, and takes charge of grain, illness, punishment, and the sorting of good from evil beneath a sandalwood tree. A bear and a tiger who share a cave beg to be made human and are given a bundle of mugwort and twenty cloves of garlic and told to keep out of the sunlight for a hundred days; the tiger cannot hold out, and the bear becomes a woman who then prays under the same tree for a child. Written down by a Buddhist monk while the Mongols occupied the peninsula, it supplies Korea with its founding date and is still marked by a national holiday.
