Diné Bahaneʼ

Diné myth · c. 1800 CE · Myth / Legend · Diné / Navajo · Romantic

The people climb up through a series of worlds below this one, driven each time by their own discord and by rising water, until they emerge onto the earth's surface and the four sacred mountains are set in place. Changing Woman is born on one of those mountains, bears twin sons to the Sun, and the twins travel to their father to be armed against the monsters killing the people. Diné oral tradition told across ceremonial seasons long before Washington Matthews recorded a version in 1897 and Paul Zolbrod published a literary rendering in 1984; the portions held to belong to ceremony are not recounted here.
