Russian Fairy Tales

Alexander Afanasyev · c. 1855 CE · Folktale · Russian · Victorian

Some six hundred stories gathered from across the Russian provinces: Baba Yaga in her hut on hen's legs, the firebird, Koschei the Deathless whose life is hidden in an egg inside a duck inside a hare, and the third son everyone takes for a fool. Afanasyev worked from archive manuscripts and other collectors' notebooks rather than from the field, and printed what he found with its coarseness and its inconsistencies left in. The Slavic counterpart to Grimm, and the quarry from which Russian opera, ballet and illustration cut a century of material.
