The Pentamerone

Giambattista Basile · c. 1634 CE · Folktale · Italian · Renaissance

Fifty tales told over five days in Neapolitan dialect to a sulking false princess, among them the earliest written Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Puss in Boots, all of it in a register of ogres, cursed lovers, and street obscenity. Basile wrapped courtly frames around brutally physical peasant material and wrote it in a dialect his own court barely read in print. The first European collection made entirely of fairy tales, and the quarry that Perrault and the Grimms worked afterward.
