Italian Folktales

Italo Calvino · c. 1956 CE · Folktale · Italian · Contemporary

Two hundred tales drawn from nineteenth-century dialect field collections across every region: a Sicilian girl who is born inside an apple, a king's son sent north for a singing bird, Neapolitan tricksters who eat their way out of trouble, a Ligurian sailor who bargains badly with the dead. Calvino chose one version of each type, carried it into Italian from dialects he sometimes could not read without help, and marked in the notes exactly where he had added a joining sentence or a better ending. Assembled in two years out of philological archives, it is Italy's answer to the Grimms and the standard door into the country's oral repertoire.
