Invisible Cities
An ageing Kublai Khan, who can no longer ride out to see an empire too large to hold in the mind, listens in his garden while a Venetian describes cities he claims to have visited — cities of memory, of desire, of signs, thin and hidden cities. Between the descriptions the two men argue over whether the account is a report, an invention, or one city told fifty-five ways. Built on a strict numerical scheme, and a set of variations on the Marco Polo of the Travels rather than an adaptation of it.
