Pin is a cobbler's boy in a Ligurian seaside town who sings for the men in the tavern and has nowhere else to go once his sister starts entertaining German sailors. He steals one of their pistols to impress the drinkers, is jailed for it, gets out, and attaches himself to a partisan detachment of misfits in the hills above the coast. Calvino's first book, written straight out of his own service in the Resistance and read since as neorealism at its strangest edge.
