The Nonexistent Knight

Italo Calvino · 1959 CE · Novel · Italian · Contemporary

Under Charlemagne's walls a paladin in white armour answers the roll call in a voice from nowhere; the armour is empty, and Sir Agilulf exists only by will and by exact observance of the rules. A recruit hunting his father's killer, a woman knight, and a squire who becomes whatever he stands next to ride out with him to prove that a maiden he once rescued was indeed a maiden. Set down by a nun in her convent, the last of Our Ancestors takes its furniture from Ariosto, not the chansons de geste.
