The Phantom Tollbooth

Norton Juster · 1961 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

A boy so bored nothing seems worth doing finds a tollbooth assembled in his bedroom, drives his electric car past it, and arrives where words are sold at market and numbers are mined from a hillside. The kingdoms of letters and figures have been at war since the princesses Rhyme and Reason were banished to a castle in the air, and a watchdog with a clock in his side drives on with him. Juster wrote it to dodge a housing study he owed a grant.
