The Adventures of Pinocchio

Carlo Collodi · 1883 CE · Novel · Italian · Victorian

A block of firewood cries out before anyone has carved it, and the puppet the poor Geppetto makes from it bolts the moment its feet will work. Hunger, a fox and a cat with designs on four gold pieces, a cricket nobody listens to, a court that jails the swindled man, and a fairground for boys who refuse school each take a turn at him. Collodi's Tuscan serial is harsher, funnier and far more anticlerical than the versions that followed it.
