The Faerie Queene
Knights ride out from Gloriana's court, each carrying a virtue and each losing hold of it somewhere in the woods - Redcrosse taken in by a false Una and a house of pride, Guyon wrecking the Bower of Bliss, Britomart in armour hunting a man she has only seen in a mirror. Spenser told Ralegh the design was to fashion a gentleman in virtuous discipline, following Homer, Virgil, Ariosto and Tasso, and he built a nine-line stanza to carry it. Six of the projected twelve books exist, closing on two cantos about mutability and the fragment of a third.
