Amoretti

Edmund Spenser · 1595 CE · Poem · English · Renaissance

Eighty-nine sonnets of a courtship that keeps failing on the same point, which is that the woman's pride is self-possession rather than cruelty and the poet has to revise what he is asking for before she will hear it. The sequence is laid over the church calendar of a single year, so the Easter sonnet falls where Easter fell in 1594, and it is aimed at marriage rather than the endless refusal Petrarch's sequence settled into. Spenser interlocked the quatrains of his sonnets so each runs into the next, which is why the form carries his name.
