The Shepheardes Calender
Twelve eclogues, one to each month of the year, in which shepherds argue over love, age, poetry and the state of the clergy, and Colin Clout breaks his pipe on account of a girl who will not have him. A commentator signing himself only E.K. supplies a gloss for the deliberately old-fashioned diction and points out the debts to Theocritus, Virgil, Mantuan and Chaucer. It announced that English poetry had a modern practitioner, and was published anonymously by a man calling himself Immerito.
