The Classic of Poetry

Anonymous · c. 600 BCE · Poem · Chinese · Ancient

Three hundred and five songs, which tradition says Confucius selected: mulberry-picking and the harvest, a soldier kept years past his term, a bride leaving for her husband's house, a complaint against big rats who eat the grain. The airs of the states came in from the provinces and keep their plain repetitions and refrains, while the odes and hymns were made for the court and the ancestral temple. The first Chinese anthology, the book every later poet was expected to quote, and the model for the Han practice of sending officers out to collect the songs of the countryside.
