Under the Greenwood Tree

Thomas Hardy · 1872 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

The Mellstock parish musicians, who have played the church services on strings for three generations, learn that the new vicar means to replace them with an organ and a young schoolmistress to play it. A tranter's son falls for her on sight and joins the deputation to the vicarage largely to see her again, while a prosperous farmer and the vicar himself arrive at the same idea. Hardy's slightest and sunniest book, subtitled a rural painting of the Dutch school, and the first to work the country ground he would later name Wessex.
