Neutral Tones

Thomas Hardy · 1898 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Two people stand by a pond on a winter day, the sun white as though chidden of God, a few leaves lying grey on starving ground. Her eyes rove over him as over tedious riddles solved years before, and the smile on her mouth is the deadest thing alive enough to have strength to die. Written in 1867 and held back thirty years, it fixes the image the speaker says keen lessons in love have since shaped for him.
