Tess of the d'Urbervilles

Thomas Hardy · 1891 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A haggler is told by a passing antiquary that his family is the last remnant of the ancient d'Urbervilles, and his eldest daughter is sent to claim kin with rich people who have merely bought the name. What is done to her in the woods above the Chase is treated by everyone around her as her own doing, and years afterwards, milking at a valley dairy, she is courted by a parson's son who believes he loves nature unspoiled. Subtitled A Pure Woman, it was refused by three editors and cut about for serial publication, and its attack on the double standard of chastity made it the most contested novel of its decade.
