Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave?

Thomas Hardy · 1914 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

A buried woman hears someone working the soil above her and asks in turn whether it is her lover, her kin or her enemy who has come. Each guess is corrected by the voice overhead with news of how quickly the living have arranged themselves without her. The answering voice belongs to none of the three, and its reason for being there is the poem's real business.
