The Man He Killed

Thomas Hardy · 1909 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

A returned infantryman, talking as though across a bar, explains that he shot a man because the man was his foe, and then tries to say why the man was his foe. He gets as far as supposing the other had enlisted off-hand, out of work, having sold his traps, exactly as he had himself. Quaint and curious war is, he concludes, in the flattest words Hardy could find for him.
