Alfred Day, a former RAF tail gunner, is hired as an extra on a 1949 film about a prisoner-of-war camp and finds himself reliving his wartime service and his time as a prisoner. Memories of a bombing crew and a woman he loved move through the film set around him. It won the Costa Book of the Year.
