Trees on a Slope
Three friends in the same mopping-up unit take the war differently: one is undone by a killing in a cleared village, one has decided that nothing is owed to anybody, and the third wants only to be left alone. After the armistice they come back to Seoul, to black-market work, borrowed rooms and women they have damaged, and the arrangement that held the three of them in the field does not hold in the city. The image the title carries, of trees on a hillside that grow crooked because they have to lean in order to stand, is the whole argument.
