Under Western Eyes
A St Petersburg student with no family and no politics comes back to his room and finds a fellow student hiding there, who has just thrown the bomb that killed a government minister and expects to be sheltered for the night. What Razumov does about it puts him, months later, in Geneva among the exiled revolutionaries who take him for a hero, watched by an elderly English teacher of languages who narrates what he cannot quite interpret. Conrad detested Dostoevsky and wrote his one Russian novel against Crime and Punishment; finishing it put him into a breakdown that lasted months.
