Lord Jim
The chief mate of a rusting steamer carrying eight hundred pilgrims feels her hull give in the night and jumps with the other officers into a boat; the ship does not sink. Stripped of his certificate at the inquiry, he works his way east from port to port ahead of the story until Marlow finds him a place up a river in Patusan, where the people give him a title. Conrad's second novel narrated by Marlow, and his fullest study of the distance between the conduct a man imagines and the conduct he produces.
